September Executive Director’s Message

Leadership

One of the most important elements that ensures the relevance and success of any nonprofit organization is that special group of individuals who devote their time, resources and expertise to ensure that the organization is true to its mission.  This is often referred to as the “governance” level of the organization, and it comprises the board of directors, advisory board(s), as well as standing and special committees.  At FACT we have been especially blessed to have had the devotion and care of a wonderful group of supporters throughout our history.  In the last newsletter you learned about some of the great people who rotated off the board recently. The new board that started with our fiscal year on July 1 is in full swing, and has had its first meeting to look at the year past and hear of our plans for the coming year. Throughout the year, you will hear more about our new President, Lania Glaude, who is new to FACT, as well as our long-time friends Jeanne Way (who continues to serve as Secretary) and Sarita Freedman (who currently serves as Treasurer).  These officers are joined by members Iris Maybruck, Tamra Pauly, Laureen Sills, William Wagnon, and Ivor Weiner.

Other individuals who are not board members are serving on board committees.  The board is in the midst of a major outreach campaign for new leadership members.  While the board of directors is an option for those who are motivated to serve FACT’s clients and families in an especially significant way, there are also leadership slots for those who cannot commit to board membership.  If you or someone you know may be interested in serving our mission in this way, we invite you to explore joining one of our committees. We are hosting a “meet and greet” on Sunday September 25 at 3:00pm in Westwood to welcome those who are interested in learning more about FACT’s leadership and operations. If anyone is interested, please drop me a line at [email protected] and we’ll get you more information.  We look forward to meeting you.

AND…

I want to sincerely thank all those who joined us for our “family celebration of all abilities” on August 13 at Founders Church.  The performances of Duroca’s Curious Journey and Jazz Hands for Autism were exceptional, and the myriad fun activities that preceded the shows were enjoyed by many. Our very special thanks goes to Elizabeth Beltran, who not only secured the wonderful venue, but worked tirelessly to promote the event and facilitate all the activities.  Elizabeth is one of those special individuals who has served on the FACT board and who we continue to count on as a model of selfless devotion to FACT’s mission and services. We also give a shout out to our newest office staff member Melisa Lynch, the volunteers at the pre-show events, and all the great performers who put so much professionalism and energy into these shows.

AND…

Just a note to update our wider network that the summer is anything but quiet at FACT.  Our programs are running at full capacity, and we have begun the school year on a very positive note with all our contracts and client families.  Linda Andron-Ostrow continues to direct our Adult and Transition Programming, and is also an exceptional resource to me and the team in program planning deliberations.  Rachael Bloom is in charge of Behavioral Health Services, including school based services.  Linda Jillian Van Leuven is working with me and our auditor to make sure we are at the highest levels of efficiency and compliance. And we are all preparing for our central office move that will impact all office staff and improve our ability to offer welcoming and suitable space for our meetings and programs.  My thanks to all the FACT staff who have begun the new fiscal year with gusto, and continue to keep FACT’s focus and mission central in their minds as they ensure appropriate, creative and supportive services to our clients and families.  We will be featuring our programs and staff in future newsletters, so stay tuned!
