It’s that time of year where summer fun comes to a close and it’s time for our children to hit the books for the school year. And as school comes with many challenges for students with special needs, here are a few tips on how to make our kids’ school years as amazing as possible!

Plan Ahead!

  • Visit your child’s classroom with them to get to know the class, the teacher and school staff before school starts. This will allow both your child to adjust to their new setting and the teacher and staff to get to know their new student and how to best accommodate them.
  • Request information about available parent and student resources, extracurricular activities, parent-teacher organizations, and more. Having these in your arsenal will get you and your child more information of the particulars of their school and what’s available for them.

Prepare Daily!

  • Have the family gradually go to bed a few minutes earlier every night until your child can wake up at the same time they’d wake up for school.
  • Help your child pick out clothes every night so that they already have clothes for the next day. Same can be done with their book bag and more.

Get Organized!

  • Get school supplies early so your child can get used to using them often. Let them help in picking out their new supplies and keeping some favorite old supplies as well.
  • Create a social story or picture chart of their morning and school routines with your child.

We hope these tips help you and your child out in preparing for the school year. Happy learning!
