Workshops

Self-Compassion For Caregivers with Kristin
This workshop will help caregivers and parents of children with developmental disabilities learn simple tools for responding in a kind, compassionate way whenever they are experiencing difficult emotions. We all want to avoid pain, but letting it in—and responding compassionately to our own imperfections without harsh self-condemnation—are essential steps toward living happier, more fulfilling lives. Through discussion, meditation, and experiential exercises, participants will gain practical skills to help bring self-compassion into their daily lives. Practices will be introduced to help ease caregiver stress and to cultivate equanimity. We will learn how to motivate ourselves with self-compassion rather than self-criticism. We will also examine some of the hidden gifts that come with being a special needs parent. Finally, Kristin will talk about her own journey as a parent of a child with autism, and discuss how self-compassion was key to her ability to manage this challenge and find great happiness along the way.
Self-Compassion for Professionals with Michelle
Practicing self-compassion takes on greater importance when we are in a helping profession. In our dedication to helping our patients, how often do we pause and notice how we ourselves are feeling? Can we include ourselves in our own circle of compassion? This workshop will help us to better understand our own needs and how to respond to ourselves with kindness and compassion. It is through our own practice, the knowing that comes from doing, that we can best help others. Through discussion, meditation, and experiential exercises, we will gain practical skills to help bring self-compassion into our daily lives. Practices will be introduced to help ease caregiver stress and to cultivate equanimity. We will learn how to motivate ourselves with self-compassion rather than self-criticism and why this is actually more effective. Then we can also take a look at how we can integrate these practices into our work with patients.
