April Executive Director Message

As we come out of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we enter Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month in April. This is a special opportunity to reach out to friends and family and encourage education and awareness of Autism in our communities. While there are many opinions on the month from various quarters (I encourage everyone to read Zoey Giesberg’s blog post for her very interesting take on the month) any time we can raise awareness we should take the opportunity. If you would like suggestions on how to support FACT during this month, please call the office (and read the notes at the end of my column).

The search is on…..

I want to update FACT’s supporters as to the leadership change that has been planned since my arrival as Interim Executive Director. In the capacity of Interim ED, the main scope of work is to assess and improve systems and structures of FACT while managing the ongoing executive administrative, fundraising, programs and governance functions of the organization. I have been honored to work with our wonderful staff (especially our beloved “co-founder” Linda and the very talented Director staff) and a newly enlivened board since June of 2016. It is now time to take the next step and work with the board to find the best new permanent leader of our organization. The FACT board chair Lania Glaude, JD, CPA is doing the first screening of the applicants and initial interviews are being held starting in a couple weeks. If anyone knows of a possible candidate who fills the requirements and would be a great leader for FACT, please direct them to submit a cover letter and resume to Lania at [email protected]

Our clients need you…..

Lastly, I wanted to request of our broad “community of caring” that you consider becoming an active part in allowing us to grow to serve more clients. As you know, FACT is a nonprofit organization that depends on donations from individuals and foundations in order to offer services that are not (or are inadequately) compensated by contract fees from Regional Centers or schools. We all can be a part of growing our organization to continue to be there for youth and adults (of all ages) with developmental disabilities (and their families) who need our support. We have plans for regional expansion, program expansion and innovative service enhancements, but we need the community’s support to make them a reality. Please watch your mailboxes or email boxes for our Spring Appeal.

Additionally, please consider the following:
• if you know of individuals, family members or family foundations that regularly give to charities, please find time to educate them about the great work of FACT and encourage their financial support;
• you can do your shopping and get great discounts, while supporting FACT; check out our website for details (https://factfamily.org/giving/);
• reference FACT in your social media posts and provide links to our website;
• reach out to clubs or organizations that may wish to learn more about FACT and DDs, through hosting a speaker or presentation.

Thanks, and have a wonderful Spring!
